Hey NoVa area alumi! Kim Lucas is in the Arlington Community Band playing the bari sax, and they could use more members! If you are interested in playing in a community band, they meet once a week on Wednesday nights. Community Bands tend to be a lot of fun (Kim says this one is!) so I recommend checking it out if you have the time or inclination. Don't worry about being rusty, generally skill level varies.
Here's what Kim said to me:
"The Arlington Community Band is a wind and percussion ensemble for adult musicians. This twelve week class is for wind players with intermediate to advanced playing skills, or players who have studied previously and want to return to their musical past and focus on performing in an ensemble. Open to brass, woodwinds and percussion. Bring back dormant skills in a fun, supportive atmosphere reading a varied repertoire which includes original works for band or wind symphony, transcriptions of classical and contemporary music originally written for symphonies, and arranged for bands, traditional marches, medleys of music from popular composers and arrangements of ethnic of national music.
"There is a membership fee that covers the cost of music and we are working on borrowing music from local schools. It is a lot of fun! We meet once a week on Wednesday nights at Swanson Middle School in western Arlington. We could use new kids in all sections, but especially french horns, percussion, saxes (except bari!) and low brass.
If anyone has any questions, they can contact me directly at kimluca [at] gmail [dot] com." |
